Print To The People has taken the decision to remain closed to the general public despite the lifting of lockdown regulations and the relaxation of social distancing measures.

Keeping our staff, volunteers, members and students safe is our main priority and we do not want to rush back to ‘normal’ and risk anybody’s health while there is still so much uncertainty out there.

ABOUT US

Print to the People is an artist led, social enterprise dedicated to the production and promotion of traditional printmaking processes, established in 2009.

Print to the People was established by Jo Stafford and Vicki Johnson and with the help of volunteers, we provide affordable and accessible printmaking facilities for artists, designers, students, community groups and the public. We also provide printmaking courses and mobile screen printing activities ideal for indoor and outdoor events. We often work in collaboration with local arts organisations and education providers to promote printmaking to a wider audience.

Our screen printing facilities have always been at the centre of our activities. After expanding into new premises in early 2015 we are able to offer a wider range of public services which now include intaglio processes and Risograph editioning. We also have a new sister site 'Letterpress At The Lodge' whihc opened in March 2020 - find our more about our Letterpress offering here.

OUR STORY

Print to the People are currently based at the Box Factory (53-55 Pitt St, Norwich), our own premises dedicated to all things print. Vicki and Jo have joined forces with Paul McNeill, Laura White and Toby Rampton to support the delivery of our new services and our growing studio membership.

However, PTTP started life as part of Stew Studios, a Norwich based not for profit, artist led organisation which provided a hire-able gallery space and low rent artist studios. Stew Studios closed in 2015 but we will always be grateful for the help and support of its members, Without Stew Studios, Print to the People would not be what it is today.

To find out more about how PTTP started see Jo's Lockdown Lesson video here.

PRINTMAKING PROCESSES AT OUR STUDIOS

SCREEN PRINTING: PAPER & TEXTILES

Availability:  Courses / Open access

Screen printing is a printmaking process where ink is forced on to a surface through a prepared screen of fine material to create a picture or pattern. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multicoloured design. Screen printing is a versatile process and can be used to apply images to a range of surfaces including paper and textiles.

We have equipment for both textile and paper based screen printing and hireable screens in a range of sizes and mesh counts. Please visit our open access page for our full equipment list.

For those with some experience both areas are available for bookings through our screen printing open access sessions. We also run a range of courses suitable for beginners and improvers.

LETTERPRESS

Availability: Courses / Open Access

Letterpress printing is a technique of relief printing using a printing press where many copies are produced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets of paper. A worker composes and locks movable type into the "bed" or "chase" of a press, inks it, and presses paper against it to transfer the ink from the type which creates an impression on the paper.

We have just opened Letterpress at the Lodge, Print To The People’s new space dedicated solely to the art and craft of Letterpress Printing.

This new studio is based within Norfolk County Council’s Wensum Lodge site and is part of their new vision for the location as a creative and community hub. It will act as a sister site to our Pitt Street location, which will still be the base for our Screen Print, Intaglio and Relief processes.

From our new Letterpress at the Lodge studio we will be running workshops, courses and open access sessions throughout the year for all ages and abilities.

INTAGLIO: ETCHING, DRYPOINT & COLLAGRAPH

Availability:  Courses / Open access

Drypoint is a printmaking technique of the intaglio family, in which an image is incised into a plate with a hard-pointed needle. Traditionally the plate was copper but we prefer to also use Perspex plates for our workshops. When the image is finished or ready to proof, ink is applied to the plate with a dauber. Once the plate is completely covered a cloth and other materials are used to wipe away excess ink. Once the desired amount of ink is removed, the plate is run through the press along with a piece of dampened paper to produce a print.

Collagraph printmaking is another intaglio process where textured materials are applied to a rigid substrate (such as paperboard or wood) to create a plate. When dry, ink is applied to the collaged plate and run through the press along with a piece of paper to produce a print.  Different tonal effects and vibrant colours can be achieved due to the plate's highly textured surface. For those with some experience and/or ready made plates our press can be used during our open access intaglio sessions. We also run a range of courses suitable for beginners and improvers.

LINOCUT

Availability: Courses / Open access

Linocut is a printmaking technique which uses a sheet of linoleum as the relief surface. A design is cut into the lino with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge, with the uncarved areas creating the design when printed. The carved lino sheet is inked with a roller and pressed onto paper by hand or using a press. We have two small presses suitable for creating editions of Lino prints up to A4 in size. We currently run courses in beginners Linocut and our presses may be accesses outside of the course by special arrangement our technicians.

OUTREACH & OUR MOBILE FACILITIES

One of the main aims of Print to the People is making printmaking more accessible to the public and our outreach activities have always been a fundamental part of what we do.

Through the development of our pop up print studio, Print to the People have been delivering a wide range of print making activities at events across the country. Alongside self initiated projects, we often work in collaboration with local festivals, arts organisations, education providers and small businesses.

We have worked with a wide range of groups and organisations over the years including Folk East, Out There Festival, Norwich Castle, Norwich Arts Centre, Culture Works East, Suffolk Art Link, Breckland Council, the WI, Norwich Pride Festival, Sainsbury’s Center for Visual Arts, City College Norwich, Latitude Festival and many more.

If your group, event or organisation would be interested in working with us please get in touch via email and we can explain the options and provide a quote.

SCREEN PRINTING EDITIONING

Our Screenprint technicians have combined printing experience of over 25 years and have a prestigious list of local and national clients. We are not set up like commercial printers so can offer a personal and unique service to suit your needs and budget.

Screenprinting is a way of producing multiple repeats of your design onto substrates. The advantage of screen printing as opposed to digital printing is that vibrant colours such as neons can be used and because each print is pulled by hand it produces very tactile unique results.

For example we can print t-shirts, tote bags, t-towels, aprons, posters, artist prints, cd covers, vinyl sleeves, cards, invitations, booklets and zines.

We can also offer design services for posters, merchandise, logos and more.

Please email mail@printtothepeople.com for more information and a personalised quote.

LOCKDOWN LESSONS

Despite Print To The People HQ being closed to the public due to Covid-19, PTTP Team members have been getting inky behind closed doors (observing social distancing) and getting creative in their home studios.

We have been trying to think of the best way we can use our resources to help the current situation. We have a stock of blank t-shirts and postcards that were for projects that have now been cancelled or postponed so we thought we could use them to print up some 'Lockdown Editions' to sell with proceeds going to local Norfolk Charity Leeway who have been continuing to do amazing work during Covid-19.

All available to buy from our Etsy Shop

Collaborative T-Shirts:

PTTP Team members either delved through their back catalogue of designs or doodled up something fresh to contribute to these exclusive tees. The designs were then put on screen and printed in random colours and placements to create these distinctive, one off designs that are like having a PTTP party in your wardrobe!

Positive Printed Post:

One thing we have been enjoying during lockdown is having more time to communicate with loved ones. Whether its chats on the phone, family whatsapp chats, zoom meetings, house party quiz time or simply putting something in the post. We wanted to help spread the love so have designed some exclusive postcards, all screen printed lovingly by hand at PTTP HQ.
