Reduction printing is an exiting method of relief printing where the printing block is carved and printed multiple times, each time adding a new colour and level of detail to the artwork! This method takes some time but the result is very satisfying as your image emerges and comes to life with each layer of colour. The final result is something un-achievable with other block printing methods. This course will take you through the technique and is perfect for those with some lino printing experience to try something different and for newcomers who fancy a challenge and want to dive straight into an amazing method of block printing.
Over the two days of the workshop you will gain practical experience of the whole process of reduction printing in lino. We will cover basic lino cutting techniques for those new to lino, the technique of reduction printing and the many ways it can be used to create an image, how to design for a reduction print and how to “think in layers” and finally the techniques for block registration, inking and printing the art itself.
All the tools and materials you need will be provided and you will finish with a small edition of your prints to take home and cherish. Examples will be provided of relief art prints which use the reduction method and you will be guided through the process of designing, cutting and printing a beautiful reduction print of your own. The tutor will guide you through each stage of the process including the safe and economical use of tools and equipment.
The number of colour layers which can be printed in a reduction print has no limit but drying time must be allowed between each print. For the purpose of teaching the method we will use a two colour process , allowing the first layer of ink to dry before continuing with the course the following weekend.
The morning of the first day will comprise an introduction to the technique and all the ways it can be used. Then you will design your image. You do not need to bring any equipment to the course but if you have your own pencils and pens which you prefer for drawing they will be useful. What you learn about the technique on the first day may inform what you want to create but do have a think before the course about the type of image you'd like to print as a springboard into the design phase.
Cutting can begin once your happy with your design and the tutor will give one to one advice on techniques and approach to tools and carving the lino.
We will take a good break for lunch and to rest wrist, elbows and minds! Then in the afternoon we will finish carving and you will be taken through how to build a registration jig for your block.
You will then be shown how to ink up your block using a roller and glass plate and how to look after and get the most from your printing inks.
Finally each student will print a run of their first layer and the ink will then be left to dry over the week.
There's no going back now. On the second day of the course you will take the plunge and cut your block further! You will be shown how to use your original design to plan how to carve tour second layer into the lino. We will then use it and your own registration jig to print your second colour, bringing your image to life! By the end of the second day you will have created a small edition of your prints to take home and cherish.
