Aimed for those who have tried their hand at basic lino printing before, this workshop will introduce you to the possibilities of using multiple blocks to build up layered images using more than one colour. You will be shown a variety of examples and techniques to give you an idea of possible effects and will be guided to produce and design your own lino blocks and set of prints.
This course is aimed for those who have tried basic lino/block printing before and would like to explore further techniques using multiple blocks and colours. Lino printing is a really versatile process that gives endless opportunities for experimentation. Once you understand the main principles of relief printing you can move on from single colour prints to explore reduction and multiple blocks as a way of layering different colours and building up more of an image.
At the start of the day you will be shown examples of lino blocks and prints and given a demonstration of different approaches to multiple block printing as well as how to design a ‘key block’. Your key block will be an outline of your main image and once prepared will be used to transfer onto a second block. This is where accurate registration is needed to ensure that everything lines up when printed in layers!
You may want to bring a photo or drawing with you to work from, or if you are unsure we have a selection of books and a computer to help you find something! For your design you will be working to A6 scale and by lunch time you will have produced two (or three) lino blocks that will be printed together.
After lunch there will be a demonstration of the inking up process and most importantly how to line up your prints! You will also be shown how to print in single colour as well as how to produce colour blends. Make sure you don’t wear your best clothes for printing, as the inks used are oil-based and will stain, however aprons and gloves will be provided.
The course fee covers the cost of the preparation of materials, rental of the studios, tuition fees and the materials you will take away with you which includes the plates, prints and induction booklet. The course also counts as an induction to this process so if you decide to become a member of Print to the People you can sign up for open access time and continue using the facilities.
